Annotated: margin notes for text, video and audio on the live web
Select a passage, or a slice of a video or podcast, and leave a typed or spoken note right on it. Publish it to a public feed, and every note links back to the original page.

Why I built Annotated
I built Annotated to compete for a $5K bounty that @jason put out on X. The idea is sound on its own: a public fact-checking layer for the whole web, like X's Community Notes, but for every article, video and podcast, not just one platform. Select the exact sentence or the exact 40 seconds, say what's true or missing, and anyone reading your note can open the original.
I also wanted to learn by doing: ship a real browser extension, with a web presence and a tool-like interface around it. So I built it to compete, to get the experience, and to learn.
What you can do with Annotated
- Annotate any web page from a side panel. The Chrome extension opens next to the page you're reading, so you capture a passage without leaving the tab.
- Annotate video and audio, not just text. Select a range of a video or audio clip, and your note sits on that moment.
- Short clips only. Hosted excerpts are 90 seconds or less, and only the range you select is processed.
- Type it or say it. Write your note or record a voice comment on the excerpt.
- Share to a public feed. Published notes go to a public feed where people can follow accounts and comment.
- Always credits the source. Every annotation keeps the original URL. The excerpt points to the page; it doesn't replace it.
- Rights holders can file a claim. If published material infringes your rights, file a claim with the operator. Details are in the terms.
How to install the Annotated Chrome extension
The Chrome Web Store listing is pending, so for now you install it by hand. It takes about a minute:
- Download the extension package and unzip it.
- Go to
chrome://extensions. - Turn on Developer mode (top right).
- Click Load unpacked and choose the unzipped folder.
- Pin Annotated and open it from the toolbar.

- The extension is for Chrome. The public feed opens in any browser.
- Can I annotate YouTube videos or podcasts?
- You can select a range of video or audio on a page and attach a note. Hosted excerpts are capped at 90 seconds.

- How do I sign in?
